Crews search for three hikers missing in Big Bear area

About 40 San Bernardino County search and rescue personnel searched Tuesday for three hikers who went missing in the Big Bear area.

Ryan Shankles and Miguel De La Torre from Oceanside and David Yoder from Carlsbad set out on a hike Saturday morning on Fish Creek Trail, according to Cindy Bachman, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

On Sunday morning, deputies at the Big Bear sheriff’s station received a report from a friend that the three were missing. The man said the three had intended to reach the summit of Mt. San Gorgonio during a day hike, taking food and water with them.

Shankles, De La Torre and Yoder haven’t been seen since.

A sheriff’s helicopter helped look for the men Sunday, but the search was suspended about 7 p.m. when it grew dark. The ground search continued in the area of Fish Creek Trail, with some people patrolling on horseback and others using search dogs, Bachman said.

The search is focused on multiple trailheads, including Vivian Creek Trailhead, Mission Springs, Mineshaft Flats and Pacific Crest Trail.

Shankles’ sister, Niki Shankles Burger, told KTLA-TV that more than 60 volunteers were helping the rescue crews search for the three men. Burger has been posting updates on her Facebook page.
