Letters: GOP tolerant of gays? Not so fast

Re “The GOP’s anti-gay? Not so fast,” Opinion, July 16

David Lampo’s apologetics reaffirm the link between mainstream Republicans and bigotry. His own reductionist argument reveals that, according to numerous polls, most Republicans oppose marriage equality: Christian conservatives, 86%; Republicans in 2010, 75%; Republicans in 2011, 88%;”tea party”members, 82%.

Lampo’s claim to have found “large, overlooked pockets of gay tolerance” connotes the widespread belief on the right that civil unions are separate from but equal to marriage. Tolerance? Americans are owed equal rights, not abridged rights.
