Letters: Our cartoonish campaign

Re “Homer Simpson for president,” Opinion, Sept. 20

Michael Kinsley has a point about the cartoonish demonizing of the other side by both presidential candidates.

However, like the characters in “The Simpsons,” the President Obama and Mitt Romney figures are not equivalent. Here is Lisa, for example: “I will iron your sheets when you iron out the inequities in your labor laws.” And here is Mr. Burns, after being told he’s very wealthy: “Yes, but I’d trade it all for a little more.”

I leave it to the reader to decide which candidate most accurately reflects which perspective. But it’s worth remembering that even the most colorful cartoons come in shades of gray.
