Readers React: The overdue decline of dog meat in South Korea

Share

To the editor: I am grateful that The Times is informing us about the horrors of the dog-meat industry in South Korea and other parts of Asia. (“30 dogs are rescued from a South Korean meat farm and brought to San Diego,” Feb. 27)

From what I have read on this appalling topic, there are some 17,000 such “farms” registered in South Korea alone, and we who care about this species or are animal advocates are beyond stunned by the size of this industry. We know from the Humane Society that there are some welcome changes in the appreciation of dogs and cats as companion animals in these countries.

Yes, cultural differences exist regarding which animals can be slaughtered for food and which are considered pets, and we must accept the existence of these differences even though we protest the treatment of dogs in certain countries.

As a vegan who opposes the raising and slaughter of all animals for food, I thank you for your article and hope you continue to cover the issue.
