Readers React: Life’s a party (in the worst way) with Airbnb in your neighborhood

To the editor: At one time I had the great misfortune to live next to an Airbnb rental property. (“Activists say Airbnb drives up rents. But is that actually true? L.A. needs to find out,” Opinion, May 12)

The owner lived in another state, and the agent who “managed” the property simply left the key under the front door mat when renters were expected (in other words, he had no idea of who or how many would show up). Loud outdoor parties were practically an everyday event during the summer rental months.

Gideon Yaffe writes that the most important charge against Airbnb is that it results in higher rents. I disagree. The most important charge is that the presence of these rentals in residential neighborhoods is destructive to those unfortunate enough to live near them.

I applaud the city of Los Angeles for restricting Airbnb operation in residential neighborhoods.
