Readers React: Palos Verdes Estates turns a blind eye to surfer bullying

To the editor: Of course it is no secret that this surfer bullying and harassment has been going on for years, but in what universe is this OK? (“‘Gang mentality’ of middle-age surfers keeps outsiders off Palos Verdes Estates waves,” July 16)

In Palos Verdes Estates, there is a City Council, a police department and evidently an entire city that believe the gang behavior by the Bay Boys, who threaten any outsider daring to surf at Lunada Bay, is acceptable behavior. What’s next? Palos Verdes Estates vigilante groups taking pot shots at people driving though the city, using their roads?

The complacency toward these overgrown bully boys just reaffirms what I have thought for years about Palos Verdes Estates: It is just a lot of rot covered with a very thin, pretty veneer.

To the editor: Personally, I am not surprised that neither the city council nor the police in Palos Verdes Estates want to do anything to stop the Bay Boys from roughing up people who want to use “their” beach. They pay for their own police and elect their own city council members, so what’s the surprise?

Complaining to that police department is kind of like what happened in the movie “Field of Dreams,” when a pitcher throws at the head of a batter and the batter says, “Hey ump, how about a warning?,” and the ump replies, “Sure. Watch out you don’t get killed.”
