A man narrowly escaped a fire that destroyed his Huntington Harbour home early Sunday, authorities said.

Firefighters responded to the home, in the 16000 block of Edgewater Lane, at 1:06 a.m. after receiving a call from a neighbor, the Huntington Beach Fire Department said in a news release.

Fire crews found flames shooting from the first and second floors and began an aggressive attack from the exterior, the release said.

Additional units from Fountain Valley and the Orange County Fire Authority were called in to help fight the fire, which was declared under control at 2:28 a.m.

The home was determined to be a total loss because of extensive fire damage, the department said.

The man, the owner of the single-family residence, who was home alone at the time of the fire, was discovered on the dock of the neighboring home as crews worked to extinguish the flames.

He told fire crews that the heat woke him when the fire started entering his bedroom on the second floor.

He made his way to the balcony at the rear of the home and let himself down by holding on to the wrought iron railings, the department said.

He was evaluated at the scene and taken to UCI Medical Center for treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
