Chip Kelly is close to deal with Buccaneers

Oregon football Coach Chip Kelly is finalizing a deal to become the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, various media outlets reported Sunday.

Kelly met with the Buccaneers last week, and both sides are hopeful an agreement can be reached within the next 24 to 48 hours, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

Kelly has been Oregon’s head coach for three years, winning the Pac-12 or Pac-10 Conference title in all three and reaching three Bowl Championship Series games.

Kelly, 48, would make the jump to the NFL if a financial agreement can be reached, a source told KGW in Portland on Sunday night.

Kelly is the first known candidate whom the Buccaneers have interviewed from the college ranks. Known as an offensive innovator, the Buccaneers are hopeful he could bring some of his up-tempo schemes to the NFL.

Wambach, U.S. rout Guatemala, 13-0

Abby Wambach scored twice in the first half to move into third place on the career goals list for women’s international soccer, and the United States beat Guatemala, 13-0, at Vancouver, Canada, and clinched a berth in the semifinals of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the London Olympics.

A left-foot tap in the 12th minute and a header in the 14th gave Wambach 129 goals for the U.S. team, moving her past Germany’s Birgit Prinz (128) and behind only Mia Hamm (158) and Kristine Lilly (130).

Anisa Guajardo scored a second-half hat trick as Mexico beat the Dominican Republic, 7-0, in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament at Vancouver.

Mexico wraps up group play against the United States on Tuesday in a game that probably will determine first place in their group.

The Dominicans, who lost 14-0 to the U.S. on Friday, have been outscored 21-0 in the tournament.

Dan Forsman never flinched in the final round of the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship.

Forsman closed with a three-under-par 69 in windy conditions at Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii, for his third Champions Tour title. He beat Jay Don Blake by two shots. Defending champion John Cook and Michael Allen shared third, another shot back.

The 53-year-old Forsman, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, finished with a 15-under 201 total at Hualalai Resort.

Cristian Deville of Italy won a men’s World Cup slalom at Kitzbuehel, Austria, and defending overall champion Ivica Kostelic finished third to win the combined event and go to the top of the overall rankings.

Austria’s Marcel Hirscher, who led the standings entering the race, was disqualified for straddling a gate in his final run.

Deville finished in an aggregate time of 1 minute 39.19 seconds and beat Austria’s Mario Matt by 0.72. Kostelic trailed Deville by 0.78.

Michaela Kirchgasser of Austria won a World Cup slalom after pre-race favorites Marlies Schild and Maria Hoefl-Riesch skied out on the first run at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.

Kirchgasser led after the first leg and increased her advantage in the second, finishing in 1:47.25, more than sixth-tenths of a second faster than Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen.

Chad Reed earned his first supercross victory of the season at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night.

Reed, a two-time champion of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, won by three seconds on his Honda over 2010 title winner Ryan Dungey, who finished second in front of 35,741 in the third race of the series’ 17-race schedule.

Eugene McCune of Munster, Ind., successfully defended his PBA Cheetah Open title at Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley.

McCune defeated PBA Hall of Fame member and 35-time tour titlist Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 245-229, in the championship match.
