Dodgers call up left-handed reliever Onelki Garcia

Nothing like a little late fortification for the stretch drive. Or if you’re the Dodgers and boast a 13-game division lead with 19 to play, some manpower to take pressure off the bullpen.

On Wednesday the Dodgers added some left-handed bullpen pitching depth, calling up Onelki Garcia from triple-A Albuquerque.

Garcia, a 2012 third-round pick, started the season with double-A Chattanooga before being called up to Albuquerque on Aug. 11. He went a combined 2-4 with a 2.90 ERA in 35 games (six starts), holding hitters to a .209 batting average.

The 6-3 Garcia, 24, is a native of Cuba.

To make room for him on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers moved Shawn Tolleson (back surgery) to the 60-day disabled list. Since Garcia was already in the organization, he is eligible for the postseason roster.

He is likely here, however, to give Manager Don Mattingly more freedom to use left-handed relievers Paco Rodriquez and J.P. Howell as he wants, and less than when he needs. He can space his left-handers and put them in the best position for the postseason.
