Mater Dei’s Curtis Godin gets the double he wanted

Curtis Godin pulled off the double he so desired Saturday night at the CIF state track and field championships.

The UCLA-bound senior from Santa Ana Mater Dei won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and completed an undefeated season in the 100. Godin clocked 20.87 seconds in the 200 to hold off Vista Murrieta sophomore Michael Norman by 0.05 of a second.

After finishing third in the 100 in the Southern Section finals last season, Godin swept the Southern Section Division 2, Masters and state titles this spring. His wind-aided time of 10.31 was 0.06 of a second off the state record set by Henry Thomas of Hawthorne in 1985.

Godin’s efforts also helped Mater Dei capture the boys’ state team title.

“I felt great after prelims and I was confident I could win both,” said Godin, a former baseball player who switched to track as a junior. “I’ve put a lot of hard work into this season and it all paid off.”

Long Beach Poly senior Ariana Washington stamped her place in history by winning the 100 and 200 state titles for the third straight season, joining Marion Jones as the only females to do so.

She also anchored the Jackrabbits’ winning 400-meter relay, giving her eight state titles. Poly trailed by five meters when Washington took the baton for the final leg and opened a 15-meter lead as the Jackrabbits clocked a national-leading time of 45.19, breaking their own mark at the Masters Meet by 0.06 of a second.

Washington won the 100 in a personal-best 11.22 — the fastest time in the nation this season and 12th all time in the nation. More important to her, however, was finally breaking the school record.

“I’ve been wanting to do that since I’ve been here,” said Washington, who has signed with Oregon. “This is my last year, so I wanted to do this for the team as well as myself.”

Washington capped her high school career in style, winning the 200 in a national-leading 22.96 seconds, the 14th-fastest all time in the nation.

Kaelin Roberts won the girls’ 400 in a national-leading 52.52 to set a state freshman record and UCLA-bound Misana Viltz of Long Beach Millikan won the boys’ 110-high hurdles in 13.47, the fourth-fastest all time in California.

Senior Stamatia Scarvelis of Goleta Dos Pueblos threw 52 feet 2 inches to become the second female in state history to win the shot put three consecutive times, joining Natalie Kaaiawahia of Fullerton, who won four straight from 1980 to 1883. Scarvelis also captured her first discus title with a winning throw of 163-7 and finished undefeated in both events this year.

“I couldn’t think of a better way to complete a great season and I’m really excited about starting college,” said Scarvelis, who is headed for UCLA, where her brother Nicholas won the Pac-12 Conference shot put title this season.

David Manahan of Studio City Harvard-Westlake had a five-meter lead on the final straightaway and withstood a furious kick by Connor Morello of Clovis to win the 800 in 1:51.04.

Redlands junior Margaux Jones leaped 20-04.75 feet on her final attempt to win the long jump over defending champion Courtney Corrin of Harvard-Westlake, who settled for second at 20-00.25. Corrin set the national freshman record of 21 feet last year.

“It was definitely hard trying to stay relaxed and make sure I executed, but I know what a competitor Courtney is and I knew the last jump would decide it,” said Jones, whose wind-legal best is 20-05, achieved at this year’s Mt. SAC Invitational. “It’s an advantage to go last, but I got lucky on that last one because in the air I didn’t hitch kick, I just hung there.”

Long Beach Poly also clocked a national-best 3:38.05 in the 4X400 relay to wrap up its sixth girls title in seven years, sending retiring coach Don Norford out a winner.
