Baseball: Four West Valley League teams reach City Section Division I semifinals

The West Valley League has had the best teams in City Section baseball all season, and now there’s four survivors set to play in Tuesday’s semifinals at USC.

No. 3-seeded Birmingham rallied for a 10-9 win over Venice when Matt Garcia came through with the walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth on Friday.

Eddie Rosales had four hits and drove in the tying run with a double in the sixth. Alberto Lopez added three hits. Luis Ramos led Venice with four hits.

Birmingham will play No. 2-seeded El Camino Real at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. El Camino Real defeated San Fernando, 6-1. Daniel Moreno and Matt Cassin had two RBIs each.

No. 1-seeded Chatsworth defeated Kennedy, 9-1. Ryan Roche got the pitching victory. Josh Garcia and Brandon Bohning had three RBIs each. Chatsworth will play No. 4 Cleveland at 3 p.m.

Cleveland defeated Banning, 2-1. Greg Conklin got the win and Sam Villa the save.

As for four West Valley League teams in the semifinals, Birmingham Coach Matt Mowry said, “It’s awesome.”

The winners on Tuesday will advance to next Saturday’s 1 p.m. final at Dodger Stadium.
