Baseball: James Acuna of Cypress, Michael Hobbs of Corona throw no-hitters in D1 playoffs

There were two no-hitters in the opening round of the Southern Section Division 1 baseball playoffs on Friday.
James Acuna of Cypress threw a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over Edison. Junior Michael Hobbs of Corona allowed no hits and struck out eight in an 8-0 win over Marina, the Sunset League champions.
Top-seeded JSerra got a shutout from Collin Quinn in a 3-0 win over Dana Hills. Chase Strumpf hit a three-run home run off Hans Crouse in the third inning.
Loyola defeated Agoura, 6-3. Derek Marshall had two hits and Joe Fortin had two RBIs.
Esperanza got 10 strikeouts and zero walks from Blake Schriever in a 1-0 win over Tustin. Chris Burica pitched Orange Lutheran past Canyon Springs, 6-0. Burica alllowed one hit in six innings.
Hagen Danner had a double and home run and Nick Pratto threw a complete game in Huntington Beach’s 5-2 win over Corona Santiago.
Chance Hroch pitched Vista Murrieta to a 6-1 win over Aliso Niguel. Jake Suddleson hit two home runs and had four RBIs in Harvard-Westlake’s 10-7 win over North.
Norco eliminated Chaminade, 6-4. Tim Josten pitched West Ranch past Mater Dei, 5-2. Austin Hernandez had four RBIs. Hart defeated Long Beach Millikan, 3-2, in eight innings. Brendan Henry threw a complete game. Robert Reeves, Dillon Klement and Cody Jefferis had two hits each.
Oaks Christian defeated Long Beach Wilson, 8-1. Phil Quartararo had two doubles. Noah Prewett hit a home run. El Dorado defeated Valencia, 6-4. Murrieta Mesa defeated Lakewood, 8-0.
Noah Fluman threw a two-hitter in El Toro’s 4-0 win over La Palma Kennedy.
In Division 3, top-seeded Redondo (27-2) defeated HH Wilson, 9-1. Sean Reynolds struck out seven in six innings. Reynolds, Danny Zimmerman and Marco Valenzuela each hit home runs. Valenzuela finished with four RBIs.
El Segundo stunned Mira Costa, 4-2. Nico Celestial had three hits and three RBIs. Griffin Martes also had three hits.
Nolan Martinez threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts in Culver City’s 3-0 win over Elsinore. Michael Netzel and Kelvin Murillo each had two hits.
Temescal Canyon defeated Corona del Mar, 7-3. Elijah Davis struck out eight. Tyler Hardman hit a three-run home run.
Beckman defeated Orange, 13-2. Austin Schell had five RBIs. Jackson Lyon had four RBIs in Woodbridge’s 9-0 win over Lancaster.
Bishop Amat defeated Palos Verdes, 5-0. Isaac Esqueda threw a two-hitter. Torreahno Sweet and Ben Hurst each went three for three.
Santa Ynez defeated Sierra Canyon, 7-1. Zach Torra threw a two-hitter.
Village Christian defeated Lompoc, 6-5. Jake Whisenant was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh. Colin McGeary got the pitching win.
Cantwell-Sacred Heart defeated Ontario Christian, 4-1. Andrew Quillen improved to 8-1, striking out 10.
Cabrillo defeated Baldwin Park, 6-1.
