Boys’ basketball: It’s time for Narbonne to show what it can do

Share

Narbonne has become a City Section power in football, a competitive team in baseball and remains one of the top teams in girls’ basketball, but the Gauchos are also trying to become a factor in boys’ basketball.

After winning the Marine League championship, the Gauchos are 21-8 heading into a quarterfinal game against Fremont on Wednesday at home. A win would send them into the semifinals on Saturday night at Southwest College, with No. 1 Westchester the likely opponent.

Anthony Hilliard, a former Narbonne assistant who took over as head coach this season after leading Gardena to the City Division II championship, has a dangerous team with lots of good guards.

Uchenna Okeneme and 6-foot-5 Reverend Maduakor are the key scoring leaders. Quarterback Eban Jackson, now in basketball shape, has added some rebounding punch. Sophomore guard Jamal Hicks has also become an important contributor.

Fremont is 22-9 under longtime Coach Sam Sullivan. The Pathfinders finished tied for second in the Coliseum League. Sophomore guard Marquis Mckinzy has provided offensive firepower for Fremont.
