Football: Mater Dei unveiled its secret weapon, and his name is Tommy Brown

It’s hard not to miss 6-foot-7, 330-pound sophomore offensive tackle Tommy Brown of Santa Ana Mater Dei because of his size.

But not many people knew much about Brown before the season other than he played 10 games on the Monarchs’ freshman team last season.

Brown is no longer an unknown after his performance in Mater Dei’s 24-21 win over Bishop Amat last week. He more than held his own playing the entire game.

“What pleased us most was his motor was always going,” Coach Bruce Rollinson said. “He didn’t show fatigue. He didn’t make mistakes when his heart rate was up. The mistakes he made were sophomore mistakes.”

Combined with USC-bound senior tackle Frank Martin, Mater Dei has the makings of quite a line duo.

Next up for the Monarchs is a Friday game against 1-0 Tesoro, led by Arizona-bound quarterback Devon Modster.

“He’s definitely the ultimate dual-threat guy,” Rollinson said.

Rollinson was featured in a FOX Sports pregame feature giving a spirited pep talk to his players in the locker room. The question was why he had to carry a piece of paper for his speech after being a coach since the 1980s.

“It’s hard for me to remember four things,” he said.
