In the old days, before there were massive amounts of transfers, high school teams actually went through rebuilding years. These days, fans are not very patient when teams have bad seasons.

So imagine what happened at Oak Park last season. The school hired a new coach, Tim Kenney, and his team went 0-10. But school administrators knew they had chosen the right coach. They just needed a little patience. They’ve been rewarded.

Oak Park has started this season at 4-0 after a 39-7 win over Carpinteria on Friday night.

“It’s a good feeling,” Kenney said. “What I’m most happy about is for the coaches and players who have put in so much time to get better.”

David Schmucker has provided a lift at quarterback and Jordan Vega has been running the ball well. Junior Reece Smith has emerged as a top receiver.

“Nobody wants to be 0-10,” Kenney said about last season. “You take your lumps. Why football is such a good sport is it mimics life. What’s great is seeing their resilience and how they’re responding to adversity.”
