Football: Time for Mission League predictions

Share

The opening games on Friday in the Mission League are so good I’m going to offer some predictions even though it will be like flipping a coin.

Loyola at Chaminade: Both teams are 4-0. Both teams have a trio of running backs to turn to. The difference is that Chaminade’s offensive and defensive lines are far more experienced and have been more effective. Loyola should hope the Eagles want to pass, because its secondary is very good. This is the game Loyola will have to complete some passes at key moments if it wants to win. The problem is Chaminade will eventually go to its power-pitch play, and I don’t think the Cubs will be able to stop it. The pick: Chaminade.

Bishop Amat at Crespi: Everyone seems to be picking Crespi, because of Bishop Amat’s disappointing performance last week against Chino Hills. But Crespi’s three nonleague victories over Sylmar, Oak Hills and Lawndale tell us nothing. Yes, Troy Thomas has had two weeks to prepare for the Lancers, but are the Celts ready to play for 48 minutes for the first time? The pick: Bishop Amat.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame at Gardena Serra: Junior Cole Klayman has been a pleasant surprise for the Knights in his first season at quarterback. He has just one interception. His job is to get the ball to running back Leo Lambert III and receiver CJ Sanders. Serra has been trying to get its offense making some big plays. There’s no more waiting. It’s time to produce. Notre Dame has played well against Serra in years past. The pick: Notre Dame.
