Yadier Molina to have surgery on thumb, could sit out rest of season

St. Louis Cardinals All-Star catcher Yadier Molina will undergo surgery Friday to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and could miss the rest of the season.
The team estimated Molina could be sidelined eight to 12 weeks. He’s hoping to make it back in seven or eight weeks.
Molina was injured Wednesday when he planted his hand for balance after sliding feet-first into third base in the second inning.
Brandon Phillips to have thumb surgery
Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is expected to miss six weeks after he has surgery on Friday to repair torn ligaments in his left thumb. He is expected to miss six weeks.
Phillips injured his thumb diving for a ground ball in the eighth inning Wednesday night.
Carlos Beltran on concussion DL
The New York Yankees placed outfielder Carlos Beltran on the seven-day concussion list. Beltran was hit in the face with a ball during batting practice Wednesday. The ball caromed off the batting cage and hit him, breaking his nose.
Jason Vargas on DL after appendectomy
The Kansas City Royals placed left-hander Jason Vargas on the disabled list after an appendectomy and recalled reliever Louis Coleman from triple-A Omaha.
