College tournaments: No. 3 Virginia wins, will face North Carolina

Mike Tobey and Evan Nolte each scored 11 points and No. 3 Virginia held on to beat Florida State, 58-44, on Thursday in the Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfinals.

Malcolm Brodgon scored all 10 of his points in the second half for the top-seeded and defending tournament champion Cavaliers (29-2). They will face No. 19 North Carolina in the semifinals after Brice Johnson scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half and the Tar Heels outlasted No. 14 Louisville, 70-60.

Virginia welcomed back key guard Justin Anderson from injury. Anderson had missed eight games after breaking his finger and then undergoing an appendectomy.

In the other half of the ACC draw, Quinn Cook scored 15 points and No. 2 Duke routed North Carolina State, 77-53. Backup center Marshall Plumlee added a career-high 12 points on six dunks to help the second-seeded Blue Devils (29-3) win their 12th in a row.

Big East sixth man of the year Josh Hart scored 20 points off the bench, and No. 4 Villanova beat Marquette, 84-49, in the tournament quarterfinals. The Wildcats (30-2) lost to Seton Hall in the quarters on a last-second shot last year. This one was over much earlier as Villanova made 17 of 29 three-point attempts to win its 13th straight. ... James Blackmon Jr. scored 25 points, Yogi Ferrell added 17 and Indiana (20-12) boosted its NCAA hopes with a 71-56 victory over Northwestern in the second round of the Big Ten tournament. ...

Kelly Oubre Jr. scored a career-high 25 points, Landen Lucas added 13 and No. 9 Kansas defeated Texas Christian, 64-59, in the Big 12 quarterfinals. With scoring leader Perry Ellis sidelined by a knee injury, the top-seeded Jayhawks (25-7) had to sweat out all 40 minutes against the ninth-seeded seed Horned Frogs. In another Big 12 quarterfinal, Taurean Prince scored 18 points, Royce O’Neale added 16 and No. 16 Baylor pulled away to beat No. 18 West Virginia, 80-70. ...

Nick Duncan made seven three-pointers and scored 23 points to help No. 25 Boise State defeat Air Force, 80-68, in the Mountain West Conference quarterfinals. ... Tyler Harvey scored a career-high 42 points, carrying Eastern Washington over Idaho, 91-83, in the Big Sky Conference tournament opener.
