After resting his sore, surgically repaired left shoulder for two weeks, Hyun-Jin Ryu will retake the mound for the Dodgers in a rehabilitation assignment on Sunday.

But the setback erased the progress he made during three starts in May. Ryu will throw two innings on Sunday for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, and will require four more starts before the team will consider activating him, Manager Dave Roberts explained before Saturday’s game against the San Francisco Giants.

In essence, Ryu is back where he started on May 15, when he made his first rehab start.

“With the way that it’s gone, we’ve got to have assurance that he can hold his stuff and maintain his health,” Roberts said.

Brandon McCarthy made the first start of his own rehab assignment on Saturday for the Quakes. He gave up a home run in two otherwise tidy innings. McCarthy threw 20 pitches and then threw in the bullpen afterward. McCarthy missed the majority of 2015 after undergoing elbow ligament-replacement surgery.

Like Ryu, he will need four more starts before he has built up enough arm strength to start for the Dodgers. Roberts tries not to project how the duo will affect his roster. There is too much time in between their impending arrival.

“We need to really focus on the guys we have here,” Roberts said. “When [Ryu] comes, as we’re hopeful that they both will come, that will just enhance what we have.”

Farewall to Tabata

The Dodgers released outfielder Jose Tabata, who was hitting .244 for triple-A Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers acquired Tabata from Pittsburgh last summer, absorbing his $4.5-million salary for 2016 as part of the deal that delivered Alex Wood.
