Four Auburn football players have been arrested on misdemeanor of second-degree possession of marijuana, including starting cornerback Carlton Davis, defensive end Byron Cowart, wide receiver Ryan Davis and cornerback Jeremiah Dinson, Auburn police Capt. Lorenza Dorsey said. All four are 19 years old.

Tigers Coach Gus Malzahn issued a statement saying: “I am aware of the situation and we will handle this matter appropriately.”

Long Beach State’s men’s volleyball team will face Erskine on Tuesday at Penn State in a play-in match to the NCAA championships. Long Beach State (24-7) finished in a three-way tie for second place with UCLA and Stanford in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation during the regular season. Erskine (20-6) won the Conference of the Carolinas championship.

The winner will play top-seeded Brigham Young (26-3) in a national semifinal Thursday. In the other Thursday semifinal, second-seeded UCLA (25-6) will play the winner of Tuesday’s match between Ohio State (28-2) and George Mason (18-11).

The University of Illinois’ interim chancellor Barbara Wilson said that the campus will begin the process of picking a new mascot but not change the Fighting Illini nickname. The university retired the Chief Illiniwek mascot in 2007 under pressure from the NCAA and others who considered it racist.

The student committee found many alumni and some students oppose the idea of a new mascot and remain upset over the Chief Illiniwek decision.
