An NFL spokesman said the league does not expect immediate action but affirmed Bay Area billionaire Larry Ellison’s interest in bringing an NFL team to the Los Angeles market.

In a phone interview Monday, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said that Ellison had one meeting with league executives in June and a second in late September, the latter a dinner meeting that included Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Roger Goodell, the league’s chief operating officer.

“The sole focus was Los Angeles,” Aiello said.

The Times last week reported Ellison’s interest in owning a team in the nation’s second-largest market, which has not had an NFL franchise in nearly a decade.

Tagliabue has said the league aims to select an L.A. stadium proposal by the spring in hopes of putting a team in place by the 2008 season.

NFL owners will participate in their annual fall meetings next week in Detroit and plan to discuss the matter.
