Last week in the NHL: Sabres’ Evander Kane misses practice, won’t play Tuesday

What we learned during the past week in the NHL:

• If you sleep in, you’re going to sit out. The Buffalo Sabres said forward Evander Kane won’t play at Ottawa on Tuesday as punishment for missing Monday’s practice, apparently after he had been partying in Toronto at the NBA All-Star game. Kane posted pictures on Snapchat, but the photos were later deleted.

“I’m disappointed,” Coach Dan Bylsma told reporters Monday. Last week, Calgary Coach Bob Hartley scratched his top two scorers, Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, and forward Lance Bouma, as punishment for having reported to practice late after a Super Bowl party.

•Toronto Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan and General Manager Lou Lamoriello are making headway in a much-needed tear-down and overhaul. Sending defenseman Dion Phaneuf and his $7-million salary cap hit through 2020-21 to Ottawa in a nine-player trade continued a trend of cap-reducing moves (previously David Clarkson and Phil Kessel) that will give them flexibility to make significant moves.

The big savings will kick in for the 2017-18 season. The move might also benefit Phaneuf. Out of the Toronto media scrutiny he can mentor the Senators’ young defensemen.

• The Dallas Stars have regrouped after falling behind the Chicago Blackhawks in the Central Division. The Stars won three straight games (the last two against Chicago and Washington) and were on a 7-3-0 surge before they faced Nashville on Monday.

Credit goes to center Tyler Seguin, who had five goals and nine points in his first six games in February. His two-goal performance against Washington on Saturday was his sixth multi-goal game this season, tops in the NHL. He also hit 30 goals for the third straight season. However, he was cut on the arm Saturday and it wasn’t clear whether he would play Monday.

• Shane Doan has had chances to leave the Winnipeg/Phoenix/Arizona franchise but has remained loyal through a lot of uncertainty regarding ownership and possible relocation. His patience was rewarded last week when he became the franchise scoring leader in his 19th season. He passed Hall of Fame center Dale Hawerchuk by recording his 930th point, and also took the lead in power-play goals, with 123. Doan previously broke Hawerchuk’s franchise goal record with his 380th.
