The 53rd annual Mt. SAC Relays begin Thursday and run through Saturday, with hundreds of high school, college and elite-level track and field athletes participating at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Thursday’s “distance carnival” includes divisions of the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 10,000-meter races.

Friday’s schedule includes college events, which continue Saturday along with the meet’s top international participants.

Also on Saturday, high school competitors take center stage, with several individuals and relay teams coming in fresh off impressive performances at last weekend’s Arcadia Invitational.

Among the top high school competitors is Johnathan Cabral of Agoura High, who won the boys’ 110- and 300-meter hurdles at Arcadia in personal-best times of 13.43 seconds and 36.42. Repeat performances would shatter Mt. SAC records of 13.77 and 36.7.

Also appearing poised for a record-shattering race is the boys’ 4x1,600 relay team from Loyola, which won at Arcadia in 17 minutes 24.38 seconds, much faster than the 17:35.88 Mt. SAC record.

Harvard-Westlake High’s girls’ 1,600 sprint medley and distance medley teams could also make record runs. The sprint medley finished in 3:59.75 at Arcadia, the fastest outdoor time in the nation this year and 6.47 seconds off the Mt. SAC record. The distance medley team covered 4,000 meters in 11:40.89, a little more than six seconds off the state record.
