Titans ready to make Chris Johnson a big offer — if he reports

The Tennessee Titans are ready to make Chris Johnson the highest-paid running back in NFL history — all he has to do is show up at camp.

General Manager Mike Reinfeldt told the Associated Press on Thursday that Johnson’s agent was the first person they called once the NFL’s lockout was lifted. The Titans reworked Johnson’s contract a year ago to give him more money in 2010 and promised to talk to him again a year later.

But the Titans want Johnson in training camp before completing an extension.

“Even though he has two years left on his contract, we’d like him to go in,” Reinfeldt said. “He could go to meetings, get to know the new coaches, he can learn the scheme. He doesn’t have to practice, but it’s something we want to get done.

“Again, we’re willing to make him the highest-paid running back in the history of the NFL. That’s kind of where we are.”

But Johnson told the Tennessean newspaper that neither he nor his agent has received an offer.

Johnson was the 24th overall pick in 2008, and he has more yards rushing (4,598) than any other running back in the NFL over the last three years. He was the sixth player in league history to run for at least 2,000 yards in 2009 and is a three-time Pro Bowl selection. Johnson is due more than $1 million this season.

Thursday’s exhibition games

at Philadelphia 13, Baltimore 6: Michael Vick passed for 74 yards and a touchdown in his only series for the new-look Eagles. Nnamdi Asomugha, Vince Young and several other big-name acquisitions also made their debuts for Philadelphia.

Joe Flacco played two series and led the Ravens to a field goal on their first possession. He completed three of six passes for 60 yards.

Seattle 24, at San Diego 17: Thomas Clayton ran 25 yards for a tiebreaking touchdown with 3:05 left for the Seahawks. Cornell graduate Bryan Walters returned a kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter for San Diego.

Philip Rivers led an 89-yard scoring in his only series for the Chargers.

at New England 47, Jacksonville 12: Rookie quarterback Ryan Mallett played the whole second half and led the Patriots to touchdowns on his first four series.

Blaine Gabbert played the entire first half for the Jaguars and completed nine of 16 passes for 85 yards, but the Jaguars managed only three field goals in the rookie’s six series.

at Dallas 24, Denver 23: Stephen McGee threw a 13-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left, then passed for a two-point conversion to lead the Cowboys.

Tim Tebow led the Broncos to two field goals in four drives. He completed six of seven passes for 91 yards and ran twice for 15 yards.

The NFL said the league’s supplemental draft is set for Wednesday, but former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor is not yet on the approved list that includes several other players. The supplemental draft allows qualified underclassmen who did not request early entry into the regular draft to have a chance to enter the NFL. If the NFL says Pryor is not eligible, he would have to wait until the 2012 draft. … Carolina receiver David Gettis is expected to be out for the season after an MRI exam showed that he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. … Philadelphia receiver Jeremy Maclin traveled to St. Louis for more tests related to an undisclosed illness that has prevented him from practicing during training camp. … New York Jets center Nick Mangold suffered a neck injury during practice and was listed as day to day. … Pittsburgh agreed to terms with former Jets receiver Jerricho Cotchery. … 710 ESPN Radio said it will broadcast Jets games this season, citing the popularity of former USC star Mark Sanchez, now the quarterback for New York.
