Didier Cuche, 36, is oldest World Cup men’s race winner

Didier Cuche of Switzerland became the oldest man at 36 to win a World Cup race, claiming the downhill on the Streif course at Kitzbuehel, Austria. Bode Miller was second.

Cuche broke Marco Buechel’s record by 85 days. The skier from Liechtenstein was 36 years 74 days old when he won his last race, a super-giant slalom in Kitzbuehel in 2008.

The downhill champion was nearly flawless on the lower portion to finish the run in 1 minute 57.72 seconds. Miller was 0.98 of a second back and Adrien Theaux of France was third.

Lindsey Vonn missed a turn and nearly crashed, handing victory to overall World Cup rival Maria Riesch in the traditional downhill at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

Riesch had an error-free run and clocked 1:39.30 on the sun-drenched Olympia delle Tofane course for her fourth win this season. American Julia Mancuso finished second, 0.91 of a second behind, and Vonn was third, 1.00 back.

Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands took the lead in a tense men’s competition halfway through the four-race speedskating world sprint championships at Heerenveen, Netherlands.

Groothuis won the 1,000-meter race in 1:08.97 to take a narrow overall lead from defending champion Lee Kyou-hyuk of South Korea, who won the 500 in 34.92.

Shani Davis of the United States was third overall after finishing fourth in the 500 and second in the 1,000 — a distance at which he is a double Olympic champion.

Olympic 1,000 champion Christine Nesbitt of Canada took a commanding lead in the women’s competition, setting a Thialf oval track record of 1:15.01 to win the 1,000 after placing sixth in the 500.

Kaymer (66) has five-shot lead

Defending champion Martin Kaymer extended his lead at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship to five strokes over Rory McIlroy after shooting a six-under-par 66 in the third round on Saturday.

Kaymer, the 2010 PGA Championship winner, birdied three of his last four holes to total 18-under 198 at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club in the United Arab Emirates.

McIlroy finished birdie-eagle for a 65 to move into second place.

David Lynn of England (67) is at 204, two strokes ahead of Charl Schwartzel of South Africa (71) and Alexander Noren of Sweden (67).

Four-time major winner Phil Mickelson was three under at the turn, only to make four bogeys on the back nine. He shot a 72 and trails the leader by 15 strokes. Top-ranked Lee Westwood had a 73 and is tied for 65th.

Russ Cochran shot a seven-under 65 to maintain a two-stroke lead over defending champion Tom Watson in the Champions Tour’s season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii.

The 52-year-old Cochran had his second straight bogey-free round to reach 17-under 127, matching Don Pooley’s 36-hole record set in 2006.

Watson shot a 65, birdieing the last hole to reach 15 under. John Cook (64) was third at 14 under.

Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland signed a multiyear contract extension with the team.

Ireland was brought in from the Dallas Cowboys after the Dolphins’ 1-15 season in 2007 and has overseen an overhaul of the team’s roster.

The Dolphins finished 7-9 and failed to make the playoffs for the eighth time in the last nine seasons.

Center fielder Andres Torres and the San Francisco Giants agreed to terms on a $2.2-million, one-year contract to avoid arbitration.

The Detroit Tigers will retire Sparky Anderson’s No. 11 this year, one of several gestures the team is planning to honor the late manager.

The Tigers also will wear a commemorative patch to honor the Hall of Fame manager who led them to the World Series title in 1984, and raise a flag with his name on it at their home opener.

Anderson, who also won the World Series twice as Cincinnati’s manager, died Nov. 4.
