Encino Crespi’s London Perrantes, a basketball standout, is ready for football

Share

London Perrantes of Encino Crespi has impeccable timing. Just as college basketball coaches are about to begin the July evaluation period, the junior point guard has emerged as a promising prospect.

At the same time Perrantes, who is 6 feet 1, has decided he also wants to play quarterback for Crespi’s football team. It is a balancing act that could test his patience and commitment to both sports.

Although basketball appears to be where Perrantes’ future lies, football is something he is determined to try. He was Crespi’s starting quarterback on the freshman team until he broke a wrist three games into the season. He did not play football last season, then joined the team in a comeback attempt during spring practice.

“I think it will help me with basketball,” Perrantes said.

Crespi has a wide-open competition for the quarterback spot, with five players in the mix.

“The best player will start,” Coach Jon Mack said.

Perrantes has a busy travel schedule for basketball in July, and missing football passing competitions could leave too much to overcome.

But his athleticism and intelligence make him an intriguing player in both sports, so it will be interesting to see where Perrantes stands in the minds of college basketball recruiters and with Crespi’s football coaching staff in August.

A skateboarding lesson

Chase Favreau, the starting quarterback at Huntington Beach Edison, is ready to return to the field this week after sitting out six weeks because of a broken hand suffered in a skateboarding accident.

He will be playing in a passing competition Tuesday in preparation for the 16-team Edison tournament Saturday.

Asked what he learned from his skateboarding accident, Favreau said, “To be cautious and that there are consequences to everything.”

Corona Centennial is playing at Edison, and the Huskies will have a new quarterback.

Action begins at 9 a.m. with pool play, and the championship round is set for 1 p.m. Long Beach Poly, Santa Ana Mater Dei, Westlake Village Oaks Christian and the host Chargers are the favorites.

There also will be passing tournaments at Mission Viejo, Santa Fe and Valley College.

Baseball calling

Rio Ruiz, the returning quarterback for La Puente Bishop Amat who also is a top professional baseball prospect, could be unavailable for as many as three football games this fall if he is selected to the under-18 national baseball team.

Ruiz’s father, Rudy, said Sunday that his son has decided he wants to play for the U.S. team. He has been invited to North Carolina for a second round of tryouts that begin Sept. 12. He wouldn’t return until after Oct. 2 if he makes the team.

“They know it’s a unique and special opportunity for him,” Rudy Ruiz said.
