Andre Ethier is selected for National League All-Star team

Anticipating that Andre Ethier would be selected for the All-Star game Tuesday in Arizona, many of his friends and family members in his hometown of Phoenix purchased tickets ahead of time.

“Most people were disappointed when they found out I wasn’t in and texted me saying, ‘Can you help me sell the tickets?’” Ethier said.

If they sold them, Ethier might have to buy them new ones, as he was selected by San Francisco Giants Manager Bruce Bochy on Friday to replace the sidelined Shane Victorino on the National League roster.

“Hopefully, they didn’t,” Ethier said.

Ethier lost out to Victorino in Major League Baseball’s Final Vote competition, which let fans decide the last player on each league’s roster. Victorino went on the disabled list Friday because of a sprained thumb, clearing the way for Ethier to make the team.

A league spokesman said Ethier made the team because he was selected by Bochy and not by virtue of finishing second in the Final Vote.

“I didn’t even know how it went down,” Ethier said. “It’s an honor to be selected by an opposing manager that you play against in the division a lot.”

Ethier said he learned of his selection while playing Wiffle Ball with his boys in the backyard. His wife received a text message from traveling secretary Scott Akasaki telling him to pick up his phone. Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly was calling him with the news.

“I kept pushing ‘ignore’ because we were in the middle of an intense game,” Ethier said. “We were in a difficult count, so I couldn’t stop.”

No deposition for McCourt yet

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt will not be deposed in the team’s bankruptcy case next week, as originally scheduled. After the bankruptcy judge told attorneys for the Dodgers on Thursday that they could not summon Commissioner Bud Selig at this time, attorneys for Major League Baseball decided Friday decided not to pursue McCourt.

Selig and McCourt could be required to appear for depositions later in the case, once the court decides how the Dodgers should be financed during the bankruptcy proceedings. That issue should be decided in a July 20 hearing.

Short hops

Clayton Kershaw will pitch in the Dodgers’ first game after the All-Star break. Mattingly said he would ask Bochy to use Kershaw for no more than one inning in the All-Star game. … Baseball America’s midseason list of top 50 prospects includes three players in the Dodgers’ system: triple-A Albuquerque shortstop Dee Gordon (No. 21), Class-A Great Lakes right-hander Zach Lee (No. 39) and double-A Chattanooga right-hander Allen Webster (No. 47).
