Angels beat Cincinnati, 2-1

Angels 2, Reds 1

AT THE PLATE: The Angels had only two hits through seven innings but made the most of them. Brandon Wood doubled with one out in the third and Erick Aybar singled one batter later to spark a two-run rally. Bobby Abreu, who had two doubles and a run batted in in his first start of the spring Monday, drove in the game-winning run Tuesday with a sacrifice fly.

ON THE MOUND: Jered Weaver, the major league strikeout leader in 2010, gave up hits to two of the first three batters he faced, then got five consecutive outs. The Angels’ bullpen was especially sharp. Kevin Jepsen pitched a perfect inning and Tyler Chatwood allowed one runner in two innings.

EXTRA BASES: The much-improved Angels defense hasn’t committed an error this spring, and with three double plays Tuesday it has turned eight in four games. The Angels also got a game-saving play in the ninth from outfielder Mike Trout. With the tying run on second and none out, Cincinnati’s Neftali Soto lined a shot toward the warning track in center field. But Trout spun, sprinted toward the wall, and made a terrific catch.
