Angels lose, 14-13, to Chicago Cubs

AT THE PLATE: Mark Trumbo had a huge game, going four for four with a mammoth home run and a double that might have traveled 440 feet had it not hit the batter’s eye in dead center. Five other Angels had at least two hits, led by Alberto Callaspo (three for four) and Brandon Wood (two for five with a homer, double and three RBIs).

ON THE MOUND: Dan Haren looked ready for opening day in an effortless three-inning outing in which he did not allow a ball to leave the infield. Aramis Ramirez, who walked to start the second, was the only Cub to reach against Haren, who then struck out the side. But Chicago drilled Fernando Rodney, who followed Haren to the mound, scoring twice on five hits in one inning. In three appearances Rodney has faced 17 batters this spring and nine of them have reached base on seven hits and two walks.

EXTRA BASES: The Angels brought only three frontline pitchers with them to Mesa, Ariz., and the minor leaguers they used out of the bullpen did not take advantage of their opportunity to impress. Ysmael Carmona, Ryan Braun, Eric Junge and Ryan Brasier combined to give up 12 runs, 11 hits and six walks in less than four innings. The spring earned-run averages for Carmona and Braun are 40.50.
