Dodgers defeat White Sox, 6-2

AT THE PLATE: Matt Kemp homered for the fifth time this spring. Kemp was among five Dodgers with two hits — the others were Juan Uribe, James Loney, Ivan DeJesus Jr. and Aaron Miles. Loney doubled in the sixth inning and surprised the White Sox by stealing third base. Loney isn’t one of the faster Dodgers, but he stole 10 bases last year and Manager Don Mattingly singled him out as an example of someone who maximizes his effectiveness on the basepaths. “James is one of those guys who took advantage when he had a chance,” Mattingly said.

ON THE MOUND: Ted Lilly said he was pleased with his six-inning, two-run outing. He gave up a solo home run to Carlos Quentin in the second inning but said he threw the pitch where he wanted to. “A situation like that, you have to give the hitter credit, which is hard to do,” Lilly said, smiling. Behind the plate, Rod Barajas had a rough day. He was charged with a throwing error and failed to throw out either of the runners who tried to steal on him. Before Wednesday, Barajas had shown improvement from last season, when he threw out only 15% of potential base stealers. Barajas had thrown out three of the first nine runners who tried to steal on him.

EXTRA BASES: Spring training isn’t only for players. Reporters who were off for most of the winter are working their way back into shape too. In Wednesday’s edition of The Times, it was written that Chad Billingsley gave up one run over six innings the previous day. That was incorrect. Billingsley didn’t give up any runs.
