NBA labor talks scheduled for Saturday
NBA players and owners will meet for negotiations Saturday in the latest attempt at ending a lockout that reached 126 days Thursday.
Talks have stalled each of the last two weeks, with the two sides stuck on the much-publicized split of basketball-related income. Owners have insisted on a 50-50 BRI split, and players have agreed to come down to 52% after making 57% last season.
All NBA games have been canceled until at least Dec. 1, with more cancellations likely if there’s no agreement by the end of next week.

The Los Angeles D-Fenders took Jamaal Tinsley with the first pick in the NBA Development League draft, making him one of many players trying to make pro basketball comebacks.
Gabe Pruitt (Sioux Falls), Jamal Sampson (Texas) and Cedric Bozeman (Reno) were also selected in the draft. The D-Fenders begin their season Nov. 25.

Houston advances in MLS
Brian Ching scored in first-half stoppage time to lead the host Houston Dynamo past the Philadelphia Union, 1-0, to advance to the MLS Eastern Conference final.
Houston beat Philadelphia, 2-1, in the first leg of the two-game semifinal series on Sunday.
The Dynamo will meet Sporting Kansas City in the conference final for the chance to play for the MLS Cup for the first time since 2007, when the team won its second consecutive title.
UCLA sophomore forward Travis Wear sprained his right hand in practice, but X-rays were negative and he is listed as day to day.

U.S. Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples shot a three-under 68 for a share of the lead with assistant captain Jay Haas after the first round of the Champions Tour’s season-ending Charles Schwab Championship at San Francisco.
Couples had six birdies and three bogeys at TPC Harding Park.
PGA champion Keegan Bradley shot a seven-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead at Shanghai after the opening round of the HSBC Champions, the final World Golf Championship of the year.
Bo Van Pelt, coming off a big win last week in Malaysia, twice ran off three consecutive birdies on the course at Sheshan International and joined the Swedish duo of Alex Noren and Fredrik Jacobson at 67.
Novak Djokovic cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lukasz Kubot of Poland in the second round of the Swiss Indoors at Basel.
The top-ranked Serb needed only 55 minutes to defeat Kubot, a 64th-ranked qualifier.
Seventh-seeded Andy Roddick recovered from losing the opening set to beat Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Roddick next plays Roger Federer, a four-time champion at his hometown event.
Sam Querrey beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 7-6 (5), 6-2, to reach the Valencia Open quarterfinals at Valencia, Spain, dealing a blow to the second-seeded Frenchman’s hopes of qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals.
The American secured his first consecutive ATP match wins since June to leave Tsonga relying on his performance at next week’s Paris Masters to clinch one of the final three places for the season-ending event in London.
The 2012 Amgen Tour of California cycling race will begin May 13 in Santa Rosa and end on May 20 at L.A. Live. Matty Alou, once part of an all-Alou outfield for the San Francisco Giants with brothers Felipe and Jesus, died Thursday in his native Dominican Republic. He was 72.
He died of diabetes complications, according to his former Dominican team, Leones del Escogido. Obituary, AA4.
