St. John Bosco-Alemany among top football playoff games Friday

Bellflower St. John Bosco (7-3) at Mission Hills Alemany (8-2), 7:30 p.m. FoxSportsWest.com: Speed, speed, speed. That’s what these two teams have. “It might be basketball on grass,” St. John Bosco Coach Jason Negro said of what fans might see. St. John Bosco’s offense has running backs Royce Moore and DaVonte Young, quarterback Rene Medina and receiver Bryce Treggs. Alemany has quarterback Devon Dunn and receivers Steven Mitchell and Jerico Richardson. “It’s going to be skill versus skill,” Negro said. St. John Bosco finished third in the Trinity League. Alemany won the Serra League. The pick: Alemany.

Garfield (5-5) at Carson (5-5), 7 p.m.: Most of the higher-seeded teams are expected to win their City Section Division I openers, but this could be a dangerous game for No. 5-seeded Carson. Garfield has played well at times against quality teams. The Bulldogs lost to No. 2-seeded Dorsey in overtime in a nonleague game. They will try to run the ball behind Lance Fernandez. Carson is finally healthy and hopes to make a City title run. The Colts will try to get the ball to receiver Darreus Rogers. The pick: Carson.

Lakewood (7-3) at San Clemente (9-1), 7:30 p.m. FS West: Lakewood and the Moore League get an opportunity to earn some respect. The Lancers’ only two losses on the field were to St. John Bosco and Long Beach Poly (the other loss was by forfeit). They have speed and top athletes. San Clemente will try to control the ball and the clock behind its effective offensive line, led by All-American Kyle Murphy. The pick: San Clemente.
