Marlins’ Hanley Ramirez done for the season

Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez will undergo shoulder surgery that will end his season.

Dr. Lee Kaplan, the team’s physician, recommended surgery to correct instability in Ramirez’s left shoulder, the Marlins announced.

Ramirez had an MRI exam performed Wednesday and met with Kaplan to decide what action to take.

No date has been set for the surgery, and that might be because the type of surgery has not yet been determined. The Miami Herald reported that it has not been decided whether Ramirez will undergo arthroscopic or open surgery. Further testing might be needed to reach a decision.

Padres recall Rizzo

The San Diego Padres recalled highly touted first baseman Anthony Rizzo from triple-A Tucson.

This will be Rizzo’s second stint with San Diego after he originally was recalled and made his major league debut on June 9. He was optioned back to Tucson on July 22 when he hit only .143 with one home run and six RBIs in 35 games as the starting first baseman.

Padres Manager Bud Black said Rizzo will share first base duties with 27-year-old rookie Jesus Guzman, who is batting .306 with five home runs and 37 RBIs in 60 games.

Rizzo, 22, was one of the two prospects San Diego acquired in a December trade with Boston when it dealt All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.
