New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia was put on the 15-day disabled list becasue of inflammation and pain in his elbow, Manager Joe Girardi said Saturday. The move is retroactive to Aug. 9.

Girardi said Sabathia felt stiff two days after his Aug. 3 start against Seattle but an MRI test didn’t show any damage. Sabathia felt stiff again after pitching at Detroit on Aug. 8. He threw on flat ground Friday rather than throwing his regular bullpen session and continued to experience mild discomfort.

“As far as the concern, it’s pretty low level, because it’s not like it got any worse,” Girardi said. “He wants to pitch on Monday, which I’m not surprised because he said he dealt with it before. We just decided, let’s try to get it cleaned up now.”

Girardi said Sabathia is scheduled to see a doctor when the Yankees return home Monday.

Sabathia, 12-3 with a 3.56 earned-run average, was on the DL this season because of a strained left groin.

Rangers’ Mike Napoli is out because of injury

The Texas Rangers put catcher Mike Napoli on the 15-day disabled list because of a left quadriceps strain.

Napoli is hitting .223 with 17 home runs and 40 runs batted in.

Padres closer Huston Street is put on DL

San Diego Padres closer Huston Street was put on the 15-day disabled list because of an injury to his left calf.

Street, who has converted all 21 saves opportunities this season, was injured in the ninth inning of San Diego’s 9-8 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates when he went to cover first base on a game-ending groundout.

“I was hoping I wouldn’t go on the DL, but I’m going to miss at least two weeks and I’m hopeful that will be it,” Street said.

Street is 2-1 with a 0.75 ERA in 36 games. He has not given up a run in his last 22 appearances and 21 1/3 innings.

Red Sox’s Will Middlebrooks has a broken wrist

Rookie third baseman Will Middlebrooks was put on the 15-day DL by the Boston Red Sox after suffering a broken wrist when he was hit by a pitch Friday night.

“He had a terrific run with us, but I don’t think he’ll be back this year,” Manager Bobby Valentine said.

The Red Sox called up Danny Valencia from triple-A Pawtucket. Valencia was acquired in a trade with Minnesota on Aug. 5.

In 75 games, Middlebrooks was hitting .288 with 15 home runs and 54 runs batted in.

“This is tough,” second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. “Since he’s been up, he’s been great. He has gotten so many big hits and he’s shown so much improvement in the field. He was developing into a great player.”

Indians’ Roberto Hernandez to make start

Roberto Hernandez will make his first start this season for the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday against the Angels.

Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, has completed a three-week suspension by Major League Baseball for age and identity fraud. He was arrested in the Dominican Republic in January outside the U.S. consulate, where he had gone to renew his visa. It was discovered that Hernandez is 31 years old, three years older than his listed age.

Hernandez was prohibited from returning to the United States until he was granted a visa July 21. He made four minor league rehab starts.
