NFL: Shawne Merriman released by Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills have released defensive end Shawne Merriman, who had one year remaining on the two-year, $10.5-million deal he signed in 2011.
Merriman, 28, had surgery to repair his Achilles tendon in 2011 and has only one sack in the last two seasons after having 39.5 sacks in his first three seasons in the league.
Merriman has spent most of his career as a 3-4 outside linebacker. The Bills switched to a 4-3 defense last season.
Possible landing sports for Merriman include the New York Jets, Dallas and Baltimore.
Shortly after the announcement, Merriman released the following statement on Twitter: “I want to say Thanks to the Organization, the Coaches, my teammates & the fans you guys have been great & I’ll be looking forward to the [next] chapter.”
