Jerry Sandusky prosecutors want jurors brought in from another county

Prosecutors in the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse case asked Tuesday to have jurors brought in from another Pennsylvania county, a day after disclosing in court records they would tell the former Penn State assistant coach the names of his 10 alleged victims.

The attorney general’s office argued in a court motion that pretrial publicity and Penn State’s prominent role in its local community mean Sandusky’s criminal trial warrant the use of jurors from outside the State College area. Sandusky’s lawyer said he would fight the proposal.

In the other court filing, made late Monday, prosecutors said the alleged victims’ names will be delivered to Sandusky’s lawyer by the close of business Friday, a process that would apparently avoid disclosure through public court records. The men are identified as Victim Nos. 1-10 in court records.

Sidney Crosby neck injury confirmed

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby is suffering from a soft tissue injury in his neck that could lead to neurological problems.

Crosby and Penguins owner Mario Lemieux met with spinal trauma expert Dr. Alexander Vaccaro in Philadelphia on Monday to review a series of recent tests on the 2009 NHL MVP.

Vaccaro determined an MRI and CAT scan revealed no evidence of a fracture in Crosby’s neck, instead confirming a California doctor’s diagnosis that Crosby is dealing with a separate neck problem.

Dr. Robert S. Bray examined Crosby in Los Angeles last week and treated him with an injection to alleviate swelling in the neck. Bray will oversee Crosby’s progression with therapists.

The 24-year-old hasn’t played since concussion-like symptoms resurfaced following a game against Boston on Dec. 5. Doctors say the neck injury can cause symptoms similar to a concussion.

The team called the injury “treatable,” adding Crosby will return when he’s symptom-free. Crosby skated with fellow injured teammates Jordan Staal and Simon Despres on Tuesday morning.

Boxer Andre Berto has injury, fight is postponed

Welterweight champion Andre Berto suffered a biceps injury in sparring Monday that has forced the postponement of his Feb. 11 International Boxing Federation title defense against Ventura’s Victor Ortiz in Las Vegas.

Berto underwent two examinations Tuesday to establish the extent of damage to the left biceps, and Ortiz’s promoter, Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, said the diagnosis would establish whether Ortiz could wait for Berto to heal or move on to take a fight in the interim.

“If it’s going to be 10 weeks, we’d look for Victor to take a fight,” Schaefer said.

Ortiz said Tuesday if Berto can’t return quickly to stage the rematch of their entertaining April fight — when both men were knocked down — he’d like to be considered for a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr., who has a licensing hearing before the Nevada State Athletic Commission Wednesday for a May 5 fight at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Authorities are investigating the theft of sports memorabilia and jewelry from the home of former football star John Cappelletti, the 1973 Heisman Trophy winner from Penn State.

Orange County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said Tuesday that the burglary occurred on or around Jan. 20 at Cappelletti’s home in Laguna Niguel.

Amormino says he cannot say specifically what items were taken but they do relate to Cappelletti’s playing days at Penn State and NFL years with the Los Angeles Rams and the San Diego Chargers.

The spokesman says Cappelletti released a statement describing some of the items as irreplaceable and saying he would consider offering a reward for their return.
