Sam Querrey advances to Farmers Classic quarterfinals

Two-time tournament champion Sam Querrey cruised through his second-round match in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands on Wednesday evening at the Farmers Classic at UCLA’s L.A. Tennis Center.

Querrey, one of the pre-tournament favorites, needs two more victories to advance to the Farmers Classic championship match for the third time in four years. The Thousand Oaks resident missed the 2011 tournament while recovering from a right elbow injury.

“I feel great,” Querrey said. “Everything’s 100%. I’ve been feeling great on the practice court and playing great lately and it’s a great start to the week for me.”

Querrey said his Wimbledon appearance, which ended in the third round with a 7-6 (14), 6-4, 6-7 (9), 6-7 (10), 17-15 loss to Marin Cilic, built his confidence for the rest of the 2012 season.

“Even though I lost it was an amazing match and fun to be a part of,” said Querrey, who received a first-round bye in the Farmers Classic. “I came out feeling great … and even though I lost, I gained some confidence and I feel like that came out tonight.”

Querrey will face the winner of Thursday’s Xavier Malisse-Matthew Ebden match in the quarterfinals Friday.
