Morales scheduled to debut with Angels Tuesday

Designated hitter Kendrys Morales is scheduled to play with the Angels on Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals, Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday.

It will be Morales’ first time in a major league lineup since he fractured his left ankle May 29, 2010, while jumping on home plate in celebration of a game-winning home run.

Scioscia is aiming for Morales -- who took a rainy Sunday off after playing in minor-league games Friday and Saturday -- to get 40 to 50 spring at-bats before the Angels’ April 6 season opener.

Thus far, Morales has nine at-bats, including going a combined two for five on Friday in double-A and triple-A games. He was one for four on Saturday.

“I was a little disoriented” in timing pitches, “but that’ll come with time,” Morales said.

Most importantly, the Cuban slugger who hit 34 home runs with 108 RBIs in 2009 tested the ankle Saturday by running from first base to home on a teammate’s triple, digging hard on the bases and stepping on home plate with no drama.

“Scoring the run was good because we tied the game and I kept running at the same pace,” Morales said through an interpreter. “I kept the velocity … [the ankle] feels good. No pain.

“It was a big step [on home], especially after so much time. Now it’s just a matter of getting back to where I want to be. Once I feel good running, I know I can do everything else.”

The Angels’ minor league games have been scrapped today, but the team will try to play the Dodgers as scheduled today at 1:05 p.m. at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz.

Segura sent down

The Angels’ major league roster shrunk to 41 with the move of shortstop Jean Segura to the double-A Arkansas roster while pitcher Eric Hurley was assigned to minor-league camp.

Segura, who turned 22 Saturday, batted .381 in 21 spring at-bats and made some dazzling plays.

“He has as much upside as anyone in that room,” Scioscia said, nodding toward the Angels’ clubhouse.

Segura is a member of the 40-man roster and was named the Angels’ No. 2 prospect behind outfielder Mike Trout by Baseball America. He stole 50 bases at low Class A Cedar Rapids in 2010, then had 18 stolen bases, batting .281, in 44 games last year at Class A Inland Empire, missing three months with a hamstring injury.

“That’s baseball … I’m not surprised, I knew I wasn’t going to make the team,” Segura said. “But I’m happy with the work I put in. I worked my [rear] off and I’m a better shortstop now.”

Hurley had a 4.91 earned-run average, giving up six hits and walking four in 7 1/3 innings this spring.

Santana good

Starting pitcher Ervin Santana said he’s not dealing with any ill effects after getting struck by a line drive Wednesday, and will start Monday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

Trout limited in outfield

Trout, who saw brief action in the majors last season, is experiencing some shoulder tendinitis and will be kept from playing outfield for about one week, Scioscia said Sunday. Trout has returned to playing in minor league games after suffering flu symptoms and leg stiffness.
