Thomas Robinson leads All-American team

Kansas forward Thomas Robinson, who played through personal tragedy as a sophomore reserve, capped his junior season by being a unanimous selection to the Associated Press’ All-America team Monday, a day after leading the Jayhawks to the Final Four.

The 6-foot-10 Robinson averaged 17.9 points and 11.8 rebounds this season and he was a first-team pick by all 65 members of the national media panel that selects the weekly top 25.

Joining Robinson on the first team were Jared Sullinger of Ohio State, the first repeat All-American in three years, freshman Anthony Davis of Kentucky, Draymond Green of Michigan State and Doug McDermott of Creighton.

Davis received 63 first-team votes, and Green, the lone senior on the team, got 53. Sullinger had 30, one more than McDermott. The voting was done before the NCAA tournament.

Davis, Sullinger, Robinson, Green and McDermott are among players chosen for the John R. Wooden Award All-American team.

The others are Isaiah Canaan of Murray State, Jae Crowder of Marquette, Marcus Denmon of Missouri, Kevin Jones of West Virginia and Tyler Zeller of North Carolina.

All 10 members of the team have maintained at least a cumulative 2.0 grade-point average and are making progress toward graduation, two components of the award that were insisted upon by the late UCLA coach whose name is on the award.

The Wooden winner will be announced Saturday; the award will be presented April 6 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

Frank Martin has agreed to become South Carolina’s next men’s basketball coach, people familiar with the decision said.

The people spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school had not announced the hiring. The university’s board of trustees is scheduled to meet Tuesday morning to discuss a contract matter.

Martin is leaving Kansas State, which he led to the NCAA tournament four of the last five seasons. His record as a head coach is 117-54 and he is 6-4 in the NCAA tournament.

Austin Rivers is leaving Duke after one season for the NBA draft.

The freshman guard announced his decision and planned to hire an agent on Monday after team officials said he spent the weekend discussing his plans with his family.

South East stripped of football section title

The City Section Division II championship in football won in December by South East has been stripped away by the section’s rules committee after it determined the school used an ineligible player during the playoffs, Commissioner Barbara Fiege said Monday. South East has the right to appeal the decision.

The title will become vacant. The school’s football program also has been put on a one-year probation but will be eligible for the 2012 playoffs.

Marshall, which lost to South East in the championship game, had filed a complaint with the City Section.

“It’s never satisfying to have to take away a championship the players had earned on the field,” Fiege said.

Fiege declined to say why the player was ruled ineligible, but those close to the football program say a dispute revolved around whether a player had practiced for the required 10 days.

Alabama football Coach Nick Saban has parlayed the Crimson Tide’s second BCS title in three years into a raise and contract extension worth $5.62 million a year.

The university’s board of trustees approved a two-year extension that will run through Jan. 31, 2020.

Arnold Palmer is out of the hospital and back at work.

A spokesman for the Florida tournament named for the golfing great said Palmer was released Monday morning. The 82-year-old Palmer had been hospitalized overnight as a precaution because of high blood pressure from new medication.
