Frank Martin set to make move from Kansas State to South Carolina

Over the weekend, Frank Martin called the reports that had him leaving Kansas State to coach at South Carolina “a compliment that we’re doing our job the right way.”

Here’s another indication that Martin has done his job the right way: South Carolina will pay him $12 million over six years in a deal that he confirmed to CBSSports.com on Monday night and that multiple sources say could be announced as early as today.

Martin resigned from his post at Kansas State on Monday evening, according to CBSSports.com, after leading the Wildcats to a 117-54 record with five straight 20-win seasons. Since taking over in 2007, Martin has taken the team to the NCAA tournament four times, reaching the regional finals in 2010 and the third round the last two seasons.

South Carolina, on the other hand, had struggled under Darrin Horn, who was fired earlier this month after leading the Gamecocks to a 60-63 record during his four seasons as head coach.

The Gamecocks have lost 24 of their last 27 SEC games and have had three straight losing seasons. South Carolina did not play in the NCAA tournament during Horn’s tenure and have made just one appearance in the event since 1998.

The university’s board of trustees was scheduled to meet this morning to discuss a contract matter, presumably Martin’s.

Martin was a high school basketball coach in Miami for 15 years, then an assistant at Northeastern for four seasons before joining Bob Huggins’ staff at Cincinnati. He was serving as an in-studio analyst for CBS during its weekend NCAA tournament coverage when reports linking him to the South Carolina job surfaced.

“The stuff that gets out these days, I look at it as a compliment that we’re doing our job the right way at Kansas State that these sorts of things get out,” Martin said at the time.
