Newbury Park’s Luke Eubank gets another shutout, 3-0

Right-hander Luke Eubank of Newbury Park is 9-0 with a 1.08 earned-run average, six shutouts, three no-hitters and has given up only 10 walks in 65 innings.

“It’s the best pitching performance in the last 30 years that I’ve seen,” Newbury Park Coach Matt Goldfield said.

On Friday in his latest dominating performance, Eubank struck out six, walked none and finished with a two-hitter as the Panthers defeated Long Beach Wilson, 3-0, in a first-round Southern Section Division 1 playoff game.

Eubank, who signed last November with Cal State Los Angeles, outdueled USC signee Chase DeJong, a potential first-round draft choice who had one bad inning. In the fourth, a Daniel Barnett squeeze bunt and a two-run single by Nick Lovullo gave Eubank all the runs he would need.

Six scouts who stood behind home plate waved their radar guns when DeJong was throwing his 91-mph fastball. Then they put their guns away when Eubank was throwing.

“I just throw strikes,” he said. “There’s nothing hard to what I do.”

DeJong was impressed.

“He’s not your typical high school pitcher,” DeJong said. “He really knows how to throw a sinking fastball. It makes you look foolish with all the movement it has.”

Asked if Eubank can pitch at the next level, DeJong said, “Definitely.”

Eubank was so efficient that he needed only 73 pitches and the game lasted just 70 minutes. He’s expected to come back for a second-round game Tuesday against El Toro.

Newbury Park improved to 17-8. Wilson finished 23-8. DeJong struck out the side in the seventh in his final inning of high school.

It was not a good day for the Moore League. Not only did Wilson lose, but so did Long Beach Poly, which was beaten by Huntington Beach, 2-1, and Lakewood lost to Marina, 2-0.
