Jerry Girardi, the father of New York Yankees Manager Joe Girardi, died Saturday in Metamora, Ill., at age 81, according to the Deiters Funeral Home.

He had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease since the 1990s.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War, Jerry Girardi worked in construction sales and as a bricklayer, according to the funeral home’s website.

His wife, Angela, died in 1984. They had four sons and a daughter.

A funeral is scheduled for Monday in Peoria, Ill.

Joe Girardi has been with the Yankees in all three games of their American League Division Series against the Baltimore Orioles, which started Sunday. He is expected to be present for Thursday night’s Game 4, a possible series-clincher for New York.
