Tigers draw first blood as Derek Jeter, Yankees go down

NEW YORK — The Detroit Tigers survived a ninth inning New York Yankees comeback that sent Game 1 of the American League Championship Series into extra innings, then scored two runs in the 12th and came away with a 6-4 victory at Yankee Stadium.

The loss was especially costly for the Yankees, who lost shortstop Derek Jeter to a broken ankle in the 12th inning.

The Yankees captain stunned the crowd silent when he didn’t get up after making a diving stop on Jhonny Peralta’s groundball in the 12th inning.

Jeter dived to his left for the sharp grounder and winced in pain as he flipped the ball toward second base. He then rolled onto his stomach and stayed down until being helped off the field.

The Tigers came to the Big Apple after a day of rest Saturday, while the Yankees were on fumes after their five-game series win over the Baltimore Orioles.

But the Yankees can do a lot of damage even when running on empty, as they proved by scoring four ninth-inning runs to send Game 1 of the American League Championship Series into extra innings.

Raul Ibanez’s two-run shot against closer Jose Valverde tied the score, 4-4, as the half-empty stadium finally woke up after eighth innings.

The Yankees will try to move on without Jeter as Hiroki Kuroda faces Detroit’s Anibal Sanchez on Sunday in Game 2.

The Yankees began their last-gasp rally against Valverde with a leadoff single by Russell Martin, followed by a one-out, two-run home run by Ichiro Suzuki. Valverde struck out Robinson Cano but walked Mark Teixeira to bring Ibanez to the plate.

Ibanez was the Game 3 hero of the ALDS against the Orioles, hitting a tying home run in the ninth and then a walk-off blast to win it. This time he cranked a pitch that landed a few feet over the right-field wall.

Valverde’s flop erased a strong outing by starter Doug Fister, who outdueled Andy Pettitte, escaping bases-loaded jams in the first, second and sixth innings. Fister pitched 61/3 innings, giving up six hits and striking out five.

Alex Rodriguez has been getting heat for his poor postseason, and he was booed again Saturday after grounding into an inning-ending double play in the third and striking out on three pitches with runners on second and third and no outs in the sixth. He finished 0 for 3.

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when Austin Jackson hit a triple. After Manager Joe Girardi ordered a one-out intentional walk to Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder hit a single to center field to drive in the first run. Delmon Young followed with a blooper to right that landed within two feet of Nick Swisher, allowing another run to score.

An error by Omar Infante and a double by Ibanez put the Yankees in position to tie it in the sixth, but Rodriguez struck out for the first out. After Swisher walked to load the bases, Fister struck out Curtis Granderson on three pitches and Martin to end the inning.

Young hit a home run to left against Derek Lowe in the eighth and the Tigers added a run on a single by Avisail Garcia to make it 4-0.
