Florida State-Savannah State bettors can’t lose

Whether you bet on Florida State or Savannah State on Saturday, you couldn’t lose.

At least not at Las Vegas sportsbooks that go by the usual rules.

The rout-in-waiting that had Savannah State visiting Florida State drew plenty of attention in Las Vegas this week after oddsmakers made the sixth-ranked Seminoles a record 70.5-point favorite.

Well, Florida State seemed well on its way to beating that spread, but nobody ended up winning … or losing.

Harsh weather forced the game to be stopped early in the third period — short off the 55-minute mark that most Las Vegas books, by rules, consider a complete game. Therefore, bettors were due a complete refund, according to Jay Rood of the MGM Mirage Race and Sports Book.

Bettors who had Florida State to beat the spread surely were disappointed.

Florida State was up, 55-0, when play was halted.

The game was interrupted twice by the inclement weather -- for 59 minutes in the first half, and again for 42 minutes before the game was called.

Florida State scored on its first seven drives of the game and officials had moved to a running clock before play was stopped.

There was at least one big payday. Savannah State will collect $860,000 for its first two games -- a large chunk of its $5.1-million athletics budget for this year. Savannah State lost to Oklahoma State, 84-0, last week.

Florida State (2-0) has outscored opponents 124-3 in two games. The Seminoles defeated Murray State, 69-3, last week.
