Jiyai Shin leads Women’s British Open after shooting 64

Jiyai Shin opened a five-stroke lead in the Women’s British Open, shooting an eight-under 64 on Saturday in the wild-delayed second round.

Coming off a playoff victory Monday in the Kingsmill Championship, the 24-year-old South Korean player had a nine-under 135 total at Royal Liverpool.

The nine-time LPGA Tour winner hit all 18 greens in regulation and needed only 28 putts. The 64 is the lowest round in competition at Royal Liverpool, breaking the mark of 65 set by four players in the 2006 British Open.

“A bogey-free day and then bunker-free, too, so that was probably the best round I have ever played in a major,” Shin said. “So that is a good thing, today’s golf. I missed just one fairway. And on the back nine, it’s blowing very strong wind, but I just stay focused on my tempo and my timing with my driver and shots.”

South Korea’s Inbee Park was second after a 68. She played alongside Shin.

Australia’s Karrie Webb, the tournament winner in 1995, 1997 and 2002, was another stroke back along with Japan’s Mika Miyazato. They shot 70.

Play was called off Friday because of high wind and the round was restarted Saturday. The final two rounds are set for Sunday.

American Katie Futcher was two under after a 71.

Lydia Ko, the 15-year-old amateur coming off a victory three weeks ago in the Canadian Women’s Open, was one under along with American Vicky Hurst, Sweden’s Carin Koch, Japan’s Ai Miyazato and South Korea’s Jenny Shin.

Bryans give U.S. Davis Cup doubles win over Spain

The Bryan brothers delivered as expected on Saturday in Gijon, Spain. That just leaves John Isner to perform the unexpected against defending champion Spain for the U.S. to possibly reach the Davis Cup final.

Mike and Bob Bryan won their doubles match against Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 to cut Spain’s semifinal lead to 2-1.

On Sunday, the 6-foot-9 Isner will face David Ferrer, who is 15-0 on clay in Davis Cup competition. Isner lost a draining five-set match on Friday to Nicolas Almagro.

Should Isner win, teammate Sam Querrey will play Almagro — who is 8-1 on the surface — for a spot in the final in November. The winner faces either Argentina or the Czech Republic.

In Buenos Aires, Argentina lost in doubles to fall behind 2-1 against the Czech Republic in the their Davis Cup matchup. Argentina also learned that Juan Martin Del Potro will not play in Sunday’s deciding singles because of a wrist injury.

In Davis Cup play in Amsterdam, the doubles team of Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka lost to Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands, 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, to cut Switzerland’s lead to 2-1 in their playoff.

Japanese teenager Akihiro Yamaguchi set a world record Saturday in the 200-meter breaststroke.

The 18-year-old swimmer was timed in 2 minutes 7.01 seconds at the national meet in Gifu, Japan. He shaved 0.27 seconds off the mark set by Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta when he won the gold medal at the London Olympics.

Yamaguchi was left off the Japanese Olympic team after finishing behind four-time gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima in the national trials. Kitajima failed to win an individual medal in London.

Cuba’s Yoan Pablo Hernandez successfully defended his IBF cruiserweight title, unanimously outpointing Canada’s Troy Ross in Bamberg, Germany.

British boxer Amir Khan has left his trainer Freddie Roach as he looks to revive his career after two losses over the last year.

Khan lost his WBC and WBA light-welterweight titles with a surprise fourth-round defeat to unheralded American Danny Garcia in July.
