Oregon State 27, UCLA 20 (final)

The Beavers were able to run out the clock, improving their record to 2-0 with the victory. They were the only team left in college football entering this weekend with only one game played.

The Bruins have lost their first game in four outings this season.

Oregon State 27, UCLA 20 (1:47 in the fourth quarter)

The Bruins needed a touchdown. They had to settle for a field goal, a 35-yarder from Ka’imi Fairbairn. The kick was good, pulling UCLA to within a touchdown of Oregon State.

But the Bruins failed to recover the ensuing onside kick, leaving the game back in Oregon State’s hands with little time left.

Barring something unforeseen, Oregon State should have this one sealed up.

Oregon State 31, UCLA 17 (9:33 in the fourth quarter)

The Beavers aren’t letting up. They are not going quietly into the Southern California afternoon.

Oregon State saw UCLA cut its lead in half on the previous drive, but the Beavers just answered by building their lead back up again, though, for UCLA’s sake, it wasn’t built back up too much.

Aided by a 46-yard catch-and-run from Oregon State receiver Brandin Cooks, the Beavers invaded red-zone territory with ease, but the Bruins were able to keep Oregon State out of the end zone.

Still, the Beavers came away with a 17-yard field goal by Trevor Romaine to finish off a nine-play, 74-yard drive that lasted 4 minutes 23 seconds.

Oregon State 24, UCLA 17 (14:01 in the fourth quarter)

Now, that is a fine way for the Bruins, trailing by two touchdowns, to begin the fourth quarter.

UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley rushed for a one-yard touchdown to cap a quick drive and cut Oregon State’s two-touchdown lead in half.

Hundley’s run completed a 75-yard march for UCLA. They went the distance in seven plays and 2 minutes 20 seconds. Hundley completed all four of his passes on the drive.

Oregon State 24, UCLA 10 (1:21 in the third quarter)

Oregon State running back Storm Woods, whose name is perfectly suited for a TV weatherman should he want to pursue that as a second career, just trotted into the end zone from two yards, giving the Beavers some sizable breathing room here at the Rose Bowl.

Woods’ touchdown run capped an 88-yard, 13-play drive that spanned 4 minutes 46 seconds.

UCLA will have the ball as we head into the fourth quarter.

Oregon State 17, UCLA 10 (halftime)

UCLA’s offense looked sluggish. The Bruins’ defense looked vulnerable.

Oregon State took a 17-10 lead into halftime in what looked like a flashback to recent UCLA seasons.

Beavers quarterback Sean Mannion picked apart the UCLA defense in the first half. He completed 14 of 23 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns.

Mannion zipped a slant pass to Brandin Cooks, who sprinted 75 yards for a touchdown to break a 3-3 tie with 12 minutes 48 seconds left in the second quarter. Mannion then found Markus Wheaton, who had slipped behind cornerback Sheldon Price, for a 42-yard touchdown and a 17-3 lead.

UCLA dulled the first-half beating when Brett Hundley hit Shaquelle Evans for a 65-yard touchdown with 49 seconds left in the half.

That was about the lone bright spot for the Bruins’ offense, which sputtered through the half. Running back Johnathan Franklin, who entered the game averaging 180.3 yards rushing a game to lead the nation, had 15 yards in eight carries.

Mistakes also cost the Bruins. On a third-and-goal play from the one-yard line, UCLA tight end Joseph Fauria was called for a false start. The Bruins failed to score on third down from the six and settled for a 22-yard field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn to tie the score, 3-3.

Trevor Romaine had a 22-yard field goal for Oregon State.

Oregon State 17, UCLA 10 (49 seconds left in second quarter)

The Bruins shake off the offensive cobwebs. Brett Hundley hits Shaquelle Evans on the fly for a 65-yard touchdown pass.

Evans has three receptions for 119 yards.

Oregon State 17, UCLA 3 (5:23 left in second quarter)

Beavers quarterback Sean Mannion scorched the Bruins a second time.

He found Markus Wheaton flying past UCLA cornerback Sheldon Price down the middle of the field for a 42-yard touchdown pass play.

Mannion has completed 13 of 20 passes for 270 yards.

Oregon State 10, UCLA 3 (12:48 left in second quarter)

The Beavers wasted little time answering back.

Sean Mannion zipped a slant pass to Brandin Cooks, who sprinted 75 yards for a touchdown on Oregon State’s first play from scrimmage on its ensuing possession.

UCLA 3, Oregon State 3 (12:59 left in second quarter)

Brett Hundley’s 46-yard pass to Shaquelle Evans got the Bruins’ offense moving forward. It gave UCLA a first down at the Beavers’ 10-yard line.

But on third and goal from the one, tight end Joseph Fauria was called for a false start. The Bruins had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn.

Oregon State 3, UCLA 0 (9:24 left in first quarter)

The Beavers carved up the Bruins’ defense, with quarterback Sean Mannion completing five of eight passes for 68 yards. Mannion worked the edges of the defense with short passes to the flat.

The drive stalled at the five-yard line and the Beavers settled for a 22-yard field goal by Trevor Romaine.

Pregame

UCLA has a problem at right guard this afternoon when the Bruins face Oregon State at the Rose Bowl.

Neither Jeff Baca not Greg Capella are in uniform for warm-ups.

Baca, who Coach Jim Mora said Thursday would “probably play,” missed last week’s game against Houston after experiencing headaches.

Capella left practice this week with what was believed to be concussion-like symptoms.

With Baca and Capella out, walk-on Brett Downey will likely start at right guard.
