Landon Donovan plays full game in Galaxy’s CONCACAF loss
Despite being eliminated in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals, the Galaxy at least knows Landon Donovan, the team’s all-time scoring leader, is back to playing a complete game.
For the first time since he reported late to the Galaxy after a self-imposed hiatus for mental and physical exhaustion, Donovan played a full 90 minutes in the Galaxy’s 1-0 loss to the Monterrey Rayados on Wednesday night in Mexico.
Monterrey won the two-leg CONCACAF tournament with a 3-1 aggregate score. Monterrey won the first game, 2-1, last week at Home Depot Center.
Donovan, 31, had played about 30 minutes in each of his first two games back with the Galaxy before going the distance Wednesday night against Monterrey.
No doubt he’s still building up his strength and finding his stride, so it would not be unlikely for him to again play only a partial game Saturday when the Galaxy returns to Major League Soccer action and plays FC Dallas in Texas.
As for the CONCACAF series, “in the critical moments, they made the plays and we didn’t,” the Galaxy’s website reported Donovan as saying after Wednesday’s game. “To have scored only one goal with the chances that we had in these two games is disappointing.”
Monterrey now faces Santos Laguna of Mexico in the finals.
