South Korea’s Inbee Park wins LPGA Thailand event

South Korea’s Inbee Park took advantage of 17-year-old Thai star Ariya Jutanugarn’s closing triple bogey to win the LPGA Thailand tournament by a stroke.

Jutanugarn blew a two-stroke lead on the par-five 18th hole at Chonburi, driving into an unplayable lie in a bunker, hitting over the green and three-putting for an eight.

Park shot a five-under 67 to finish at 12 under, and earned $225,000 for her fourth LPGA Tour title. Jutanugarn had a hole in one on the par-three 12th and closed with a 72.

Top-ranked Yani Tseng had a 63 to tie for third at 10 under with So Yeon Ryu (68), Stacy Lewis (70) and Beatriz Recari (70).

It was the fourth LPGA win for the 24-year-old Park after her most recent in the 2012 Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia in October.

“Out of all the other wins, this win just felt like it was not as much work this week,” Park said. “It was a lot easier this week for me and I really want to congratulate Ariya for her fantastic golf the last four days. She has a lot of fans out here and she’s very talented. So I think I’ll be seeing more of her.”

Michele Redman won the Legends Tour’s season-opening Walgreens Charity Classic, beating Canada’s Lorie Kane by two strokes in cold and windy conditions at Sun City, Ariz.

Redman, a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour who played on four U.S. Solheim Cup teams, shot a four-under 68 to finish at five under in the 36-hole event.

Ain’t No Other wins Sensational Star

Ain’t No Other defeated Starspangled Heat by three-quarters of a length to win the $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes for older California-bred horses at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Ain’t No Other ran 61/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in 1:11.53 and paid $11.40, $6 and $4.

It was Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer’s second stakes win of the weekend, following the San Carlos on Saturday. Bejarano has 10 wins in 17 mounts for Hollendorfer at the meet. The trainer has 19 wins overall.

Tony Schumacher beat Morgan Lucas in the tire-smoking top-fuel final in the NHRA Arizona Nationals for his 70th victory and fourth at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler.

Schumacher and Lucas lost traction early, and both drivers were on and off the throttle as they navigated the dragstrip, with Schumacher able to get his 8,000-horsepower dragster under control first.

Schumacher had a 4.606-second run at 213.20 mph, and Lucas finished in 4.652 at 258.67.

Schumacher leads the series standings after two races.

Ron Capps topped the funny car field, and Erica Enders-Stevens won in pro stock.

Tina Maze of Slovenia clinched her first overall World Cup title, winning the super-combined at Meribel, France, for her eighth victory this season with nine races still to go.

Maze led the downhill section and coasted home in the slalom after Maria Hoefl-Riesch crashed out of contention. She also tied a season record with her 18th top-three finish, matching the podium mark set by Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden and Hanni Wenzel of Liechtenstein.

Kei Nishikori of Japan won the third tennis title of his career and second since October, beating Feliciano Lopez of Spain, 6-2, 6-3, in the U.S. National Indoor Championships at Memphis, Tenn.

David Ferrer won his second tournament this season by defeating Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, to successfully defend his Copa Claro title in Buenos Aires.
