Ex-WNBA star Chamique Holdsclaw faces aggravated assault charges

Former WNBA star and Sparks player Chamique Holdsclaw was indicted on six counts on Wednesday by a Fulton (Ga.) County grand jury, including two counts of aggravated assault, one count of criminal damage in the first degree, two counts of criminal damage in the second degree and one count of possession of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Holdsclaw, 35, was arrested last November after allegedly assaulting her ex-girlfriend and former Atlanta Dream teammate Jennifer Lacy.

According to reports, Holdsclaw smashed the windows of Lacy’s car with a baseball bat and fired a gunshot into the car while Lacy was inside.

No one was injured in the incident.

Holdsclaw turned herself in three days after the alleged attack and was released on $100,000 bond.

Holdsclaw’s attorney, Ed Garland, said she plans to plead not guilty, according to USA Today.

No date for arraignment has been set yet.

Holdsclaw played in the WNBA for 11 seasons and was a six-time All-Star. She played for the Sparks in 2005 and 2006, then retired after playing only five games in 2007.

She returned to play for Atlanta in 2009, where she played alongside Lacy. Holdsclaw permanently retired after the 2010 season.

In an autobiography released last March, “Breaking Through: Beating the Odds Shot After Shot,” Holdsclaw said that she suffered from clinical depression and had attempted suicide while playing for the Sparks in 2006.
