Geno Smith will not attend Mark Sanchez’s annual “Jets West” informal off-season practices at Mission Viejo High, according to multiple media sources.

On the one hand, the move makes sense for the New York Jets’ second-round draft pick out of West Virginia. After all, Sanchez is the guy he will probably be competing with for the team’s starting quarterback job. Why would he want to play nice with a guy who is going to be his rival when training camp starts in just a few weeks?

Plus, Smith has been working out on his own all summer in Florida. Shouldn’t he stay where he’s most comfortable and might feel he’s being best prepared for his first NFL season?

On the other hand, though, shouldn’t a rookie -- particularly one who is hoping to take on a role as a team leader -- be looking to create as much goodwill among his teammates as possible? Not to mention that he should probably want to be out there showing the world that he’s the one who should win that position.

Back at the Jets’ minicamp in June, Smith famously replied “No comment” when asked if he would attend Sanchez’s workouts, according to the New York Daily News. He later clarified that he hadn’t heard of “Jets West” and didn’t understand the question.

“Mark hasn’t officially extended the hand to me, but I’m pretty sure there’s no problem there,” Smith said at the time. “I’m more than willing to go there.”

Sanchez said: “Everyone’s always been invited.”

Which do you think would be the better move for Smith?
